The Story
Academics
Allen emphasized the importance of a "business first" mindset when approaching high school. He advised students to prioritize their academic performance, urging them to aim for the highest grades possible. By doing so, they would not only enhance their knowledge and skills but also open doors to valuable opportunities, such as academic scholarships. Allen believed that treating education like a business venture would empower students to take charge of their futures, allowing them to invest time and effort into their studies. His approach encouraged a disciplined and focused attitude, fostering a sense of responsibility and ambition among students. Ultimately, Allen's advice served as a guiding principle for students to navigate their high school years with purpose and determination, setting them on a path toward success in their academic and professional endeavors.
Skill Building
As a draftsman, Allen developed a deep appreciation for the skilled trades, recognizing the artistry and precision involved in each project. His wife, Carolyn, a talented beautician, proudly operated the oldest African American-owned business in Bloomington/Normal, which not only showcased her expertise but also served as a testament to their community's rich history. Together, they understood that higher education is not the only path to success; many can find fulfillment and financial stability in skilled trades and entrepreneurship. Their journey emphasizes the importance of hard work and dedication, illustrating that making a living is attainable through various avenues, regardless of traditional schooling. This belief resonates deeply within their lives and the legacy they wish to create for future generations.
